WATER AND HOLDING TANKS
SANITIZING POTABLE WATER SYSTEMS
The following procedure is recommended to sanitize your potable fresh water system. This procedure applies to new tanks as well as those not in use for long periods of time, or one that may have become contaminated.
- With tank empty pour a solution of bleach, 1/4 cup of Clorox or Purex household bleach per gallon of water, into the tank. Use about 1 gallon of solution per 15 gallons of tank capacity.
- Fill the remaining portion of the tank with fresh water. Open each tap one at a time until the water solution comes out.
- Let stand for three hours
- Drain and flush with fresh water
- To remove any offensive tastes or odors which might remain, mix a solution of one litre of vinager to five gallons of water and allow solution to slosh around inside the tank for several days as you drive or cruise in your boat
- Drain tank again and flush with fresh water
